Report: Rams interested in 'shopping several players' for picks

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

In years past, NFL trade rumors would be worthless at this point in the season. But with the new trade deadline in place, clubs still have over a week to make deals (Tuesday following Week 8 is the new deadline). One team reportedly interested in dealing is the St. Louis Rams.

Michael Lombardi of NFL Network (via Ryan Van Bibber of Turf Show Times) reports that Jeff Fisher's team is "shopping several players" in an attempt to get draft picks in return.

This isn't, apparently, a fire sale for the Rams, who are 3-3 and still very much in the mix for the NFC West. Instead they're simply trying to get value back for players might be on the way out but could contribute elsewhere.

Steven Jackson is the most obvious candidate here.'s Pete Prisco recently reported that the Rams let Jackson void the final year of his deal even though he failed to meet the necessary incentives to do so. That's a pretty clear indication St. Louis isn't interested in keeping him long-term and it also boosts his value to a potential trading partner as it wouldn't be encumbered past this season.

But moving someone like Jackson still isn't easy. To trade him, you need a team that's A) struggled to run the ball this season (or is dealing with injuries); B) is sure to be a contender; C) has an aggressive GM; and D) has a GM willing to give up picks.

Three teams come to mind: the Jets, Packers and Steelers. But the Packers and Steelers don't like giving up picks and typically value players appropriately (which is to say: They aren't going to cough up anything resembling a decent pick for a running back). With injuries piling up to the point they've got Tim Tebow rising on the running back depth chart, it's possible the Jets could be desperate enough to make a move. And Jackson could actually give them a worthy feature back for the ground-and-pound offense.

But the best guess is that Jackson ends up staying put. It would take a season-crushing injury or a really good offer to actually get him on the move out of St. Louis before the end of the season.
