Bills DE Chris Kelsay: 'Not everybody was playing hard every snap'

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer
This is probably what Kelsay wants to do those teammates who aren't playing hard enough. (US Presswire)

The Bills have perhaps the worst defense in the league. They rank 31st with 32.4 points per game, and they're also next-to-last in yards allowed with 424.1. It shouldn't be this way -- not with the high-priced signing of Mario Williams, the 2011 first-round pick of Marcell Dareus, and a secondary that includes two Buffalo second-round picks (Jairus Byrd, Aaron Williams) and a first-rounder (Stephon Gilmore).

But the Bills are here, allowing at least 35 points four times through the first seven games of the season.

And you know what one of the team's biggest problem is, in defensive end Chris Kelsay's eyes? Effort and the lack thereof.

“Some way, somehow, we've got to understand what accountability means across the board, playing hard every play,” Kelsay said, via the team's official website. “You watch the film and not everybody was playing hard every snap, and that's unacceptable.”

That's what Kelsay saw, and it's not the first time this season, either. His teammates need to recognize the deficiency and fix it. By playing harder, Kelsay says.

“At the end of the day, that's who is on the field,” he said. “Coaches coach, and players play. We might have to grab guys by the shirt collar and tell them to get moving. It's nothing personal, but we're relying on you. Myself included. If I'm not doing my job, I expect Kyle [Williams] to grab me by the neck and tell me to get going. That's what it's going to take. We've got a lot of young guys. We're going to get everybody on the same page.”

Right, but here's what I th … Oh, you're not done?

“If you aren't going to give us everything you've got, you shouldn't be on the field,” Kelsay said. “I don't care who you are. Obviously, I'm not the one to make those decisions because I'm in that mix. I'm not pointing the finger. I'm looking in the mirror myself first and foremost. If you're not going to, you shouldn't play.”

This kind of discussion shows you the trouble in which the Bills find themselves. Kelsay either is on the verge of antagonizing his teammates by pointing out their lack of effort and this whole issue will backfire, or Buffalo's offenders will try to prove Kelsay wrong by giving the kind of effort that Kelsay expected in the first place.
