Redskins to wear 1937 throwback uniforms against Panthers on Sunday

Last week, we all had a good laugh at the Steelers' new (old) 1934 throwback uniforms that were equal parts bumblebee and prison couture. This week, the wayback machine is in Washington and, mercifully, the Redskins' nod to the past looks, well, really good.

The unis are to commemorate the team's 80th anniversary and are a modern interpretation of what the 1937 kit looked like. (Note to Steelers: When it comes to fashion interpretations, modern is much preferred to literal.) Why 1937? According to the Washington Post, it's a tribute to both the team's first year in DC after leaving Boston and to their first NFL championship.

When the uniforms were first unveiled in May, general manager Bruce Allen offered this: “Love ‘em. It's our tradition. It's authentic. That's what we were looking for: authenticity."

(When the Steelers' throwbacks were unveiled in April, team president Art Rooney II likened them to a "prison uniform.")

No word on if the throwbacks will help Redskins' receivers catch the ball.

This seems like the perfect time to trot out some of the more memorable throwbacks in recent years. And by "memorable," we obviously mean "ugly."
