Andy Reid: Vick 'will continue to be the starting quarterback' for Eagles

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

While it was still somewhat unclear whether Michael Vick would continue to be the starting quarterback for the Eagles -- he even said last Sunday coach Andy Reid “obviously” was thinking about making a change and that Vick would support him if he did so -- the team announced earlier this week that Vick would remain as the starter at least for now.

As for the rest of the season? Reid put an end to the speculation Thursday.

So, there you go. Vick will be the starting quarterback for the rest of the season -- or until Reid believes it's in the team's best interest (or, quite frankly, in the interest of his own job) to go with somebody else.

In reality, it makes little sense for Reid to voluntarily play rookie backup Nick Foles at this point (even though we believe Foles is the sixth-best backup in the league). Reid can't look to the future on this team, because if the present crumbles apart, Reid probably won't get to be part of that future.

And considering nobody has any idea how Foles will play in the regular season, even if he did have a strong preseason, it's probably not worth the risk that Foles will be good enough to provide a spark to a Philadelphia franchise that could use one.

Until then, Reid has to hope Vick can rediscover himself and provide a spark of his own.
