Rams-49ers ends in tie thanks to bizarre late-game decisions

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

You rarely see ties in the NFL, but we got one on Sunday as the Rams and 49ers ended their NFC West divisional game all square at 24-24.

A slew of bizarre decisions, late flags, penalties and general football malaise conspired to create the first tie in an NFL game since the infamous Donovan McNabb game between the Eagles and Bengals on Nov. 16, 2008 (when the former Eagles quarterback admitted not knowing ties existed in the NFL).

It was the 18th tie in NFL history since the league instituted overtime in the 1974 season, and the first since the new overtime rules were installed prior to the 2012 season.

The Rams had multiple opportunities to close out the 49ers, but messed up some pretty critical chances. On their opening overtime possession, Sam Bradford hit Danny Amendola for an 80-yard catch that would've set them up for a field goal at minimum. But an incredibly late flag for illegal formation on St. Louis negated the play and sent the Rams marching back down the field. They would eventually punt, which led to a 49ers drive and a missed David Akers field goal.

On the next possession, the Rams moved down to the 49ers 35-yard line and were set to attempt a 53-yard Greg Zuerlein field goal but -- somehow -- allowed the play clock to expire and were flagged for delay of game. Making matters worse is the fact that Jeff Fisher was sitting on a timeout when the penalty was called. Zuerlein missed a 58-yard attempt next.

Both teams would get one more possession, with no points being scored and the result a very, very rare tie.
