49ers' Brandon Jacobs prefers it if you don't ask questions about playing time

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

The last we heard from running back Brandon Jacobs, he was shaking off the sting of the Giants releasing him after two Super Bowl titles and feeling the relief of the 49ers signing him while playing in a bounce house with a 6-year-old who touched Jacobs' soul with his kindness (hmm, that sentence might not be totally clear -- it's probably best to click the link).

But ever since he traveled to San Francisco for the start of the season, Jacobs hasn't had much to say. Namely, because he hasn't played a single down for the 49ers.

Obviously, San Francisco is doing just fine with Frank Gore as its featured back and Kendall Hunter as the backup (not to mention backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick), and though Jacobs was bothered by knee trouble early in the season, he says he's completely healthy these days.

Yet, he remains on the inactive list. But don't bother asking Jacobs through Twitter what the deal is with his continued benching. Otherwise, you might get a response similar to this.

This isn't the first time Jacobs has expressed a little frustration with his non-role.

"I feel great,” Jacobs told reporters a month ago. “I feel phenomenal. My leg is as fresh as yours. … I'm hanging in there, I'm working every day, doing what I have to do. Let's say I'm just working and doing what I have to do and that's that. I've learned over the years when you open your mouth and say certain things, it hurts you, so I'm just going to shut up and keep working."

Then, a few weeks ago, he said this: "I'm ready whenever coach calls my name. I can't do anything about what's going on, but I can work hard and show coach that I'm ready, that I'm healthy."

So, we don't have an answer as to why Jacobs isn't playing. And as he said Monday, he'd prefer it if you didn't even ask the question.
