Raiders cut linebacker Aaron Curry

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

The Raiders defense is horrid this season. But not so bad, apparently, that they're willing to keep Aaron Curry on the roster, as the team announced they cut the linebacker on Tuesday.

Curry, a former top-five pick by the Seahawks, was activated by the Raiders just two weeks ago. Oakland confirmed his release Tuesday afternoon, after he tweeted that he'd been dumped by the team.

Love, love, love **packs box** there. Do not love, love, love what's happened to Curry over his career. I was sure when he came out he'd be one of the safest high-end linebacker picks we'd seen in a while, mainly because his success came at Wake Forest.

Curry was anything but, busting out with the Seahawks after they took him fourth overall in 2009 (a draft, which, while we're here, was pretty darn bust-y) and gave him $34 million guaranteed. Woof.

In October of 2011, the Raiders traded for Curry and he started nine games for Oakland over the rest of last season. He played in two this year before being released.

It's likely that Curry, just based on name value and upside, will land somewhere, but it's a crippling indictment of him when a defense as wretched as Oakland's isn't interested in his services.

Curry isn't a quarterback, so he won't ever be considered one of the great "busts" in NFL history, but given his position, where he was drafted and the expectations for him coming into the NFL, he at least warrants honorable mention when those lists start getting whipped up in April.
