Cam Cameron out as Ravens OC, Jim Caldwell takes over duties

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

Ravens offensive coordinator Cam Cameron's been under heavy fire for his play calling over the last two years, but fans will need to find someone else to focus their anger on, as Cameron is out as OC in Baltimore as of Monday.

Taking over for Cameron is Jim Caldwell, the former Colts coach who took over as quarterbacks coach for the Ravens in 2012.

Dan Patrick first floated rumors of a coaching change Monday morning, with the logical step being a Cameron-Caldwell swap, considering the presence of Tony Dungy (Caldwell's mentor) in the studio with Patrick.

Under Caldwell this year, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco's on pace for one of his best seasons -- he's completing 60 percent of his passes and will finish just shy of 4,000 passing yards if he keeps up his current yards-per-game pace of 247.7. He's also on pace to throw 22.15 passing touchdowns and just 11.07 interceptions.

It's a bit stunning that Baltimore's dumping its offensive coordinator with three games left in the season, but it's also a little bit stunning that the Ravens haven't made a move before this point. Cameron's refusal to spread the field and truly utilize Ray Rice has been perplexing to say the least.

Caldwell hasn't exactly been free from scrutiny during his career, of course. It helped that he was "in charge" of an offense featuring Peyton Manning during his first two years as Indy's head coach, but he was also in charge of running the Colts ship into the proverbial rocks during a nightmare 2011 season.

If the Ravens offense gets rolling, Caldwell will certainly have a shot to keep the gig in 2013. But if the Ravens don't improve, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora has an interesting idea for a name they could chase in the offseason:

Norv would be an improvement at OC; say what you want about Turner as a head coach, but the guy can call some plays. Of course, it's hard to imagine what will make the Ravens happy. For all of Cameron's issues, the Ravens ranked 11th, ninth, 16th, 12th and ninth in points scored on offense during his tenure.

So good luck, Jim Caldwell. You'll need it next week against ... Peyton Manning and the Broncos.
