Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirms confrontation with NT Jay Ratliff

On Tuesday, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones confirmed a previous report that he and nose tackle Jay Ratliff had a confrontation following Dallas' Week 13 win over the Eagles on Dec. 2.

Apparently, Ratliff didn't appreciate Jones telling him how much he was needed on the field. ESPN.com's Calvin Watkins reported that "Jones offered encouragement to Ratliff in regards to him returning to the field. Ratliff, an emotional player who walks around the locker room with a brooding presence, reacted in an angry tone."

Sources told 105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher that the jaw-to-jaw exchange became "volcanic," and that the 70-year-old Jones didn't back down, even as the 6-foot-4, 300-pound Ratliff "rose to physically challenge" the owner "and then made derisive mention of Jones' age."

So that happened. (Maybe this is why Jones was locked out of the team locker room following the Falcons game.)

“They're both passionate men and great men and they want to win, that's all it is,'' a source told Fisher. “But they were in each other's faces. People had to intervene.''

Worth mentioning: In September 2011, Jones agreed to pay Ratliff $40 million over five years.

“Well, you've heard the old deal, ‘What goes on in there, stays in there.' Obviously it didn't,” Jones said on during his weekly appearance on 105.3 (via the Dallas Morning News). “I think the world of Jay and I think of him as a competitor. I know how hard he's worked to be where he is.

“Jay has had injuries this year that are just mind-boggling, considering the player that he's been for us," Jones continued. "We let the emotion of the game the other day get to us, but that's just the way things work sometime. He wants to win. He wants to do everything he can for the team, and that's the way I want it.”

Jones wasn't sure if Ratliff would be healthy enough to return for the Cowboys' game against the Steelers on Sunday.

“We'll see how it goes this week,” the owner said. “He's trying to get back out there. I would say right now it's doubtful. But, again, we do need him out there. He's one of our team leaders. Make no mistake about it, he can help us. And he's going to be out there, trust me, if he's got a leg to stand on. He has that kind of attitude.”

Jones would know.
