Steelers suspend Mendenhall for conduct detrimental to team

Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall has been suspended one game for conduct detrimental to the team, the club announced Tuesday.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette, Mendenhall was suspended because after the Steelers informed him that he wouldn't dress for last Sunday's game against the Chargers, Mendenhall didn't show up to Heinz Field. The suspension will cost Mendenhall $41,176 of his $700,000 salary.

The 2008 first-round pick played in just four games this season, most recently when he fumbled the ball twice in Pittsburgh's 20-14 loss to the Browns (to be fair, the Steelers had eight turnovers in the game).

Mendenhall missed the first three games of the season while he recovered from an ACL injury suffered late in 2011. He looked explosive against the Eagles in Week 5, rushing for 68 yards on 13 carries with a touchdown reception. He played in Week 6 but was less effective (six carries, 6 yards), before missing the next month with an Achilles injury.

Mendenhall rushed 11 times for 33 yards against the Ravens in Week 11, and then the Browns game happened.

In the days following the loss to Cleveland, coach Mike Tomlin announced that former sixth-round pick Jonathan Dwyer would be the starting back, a job he still holds. Meanwhile, Mendenhall has been a healthy game-day scratch the last two weeks.

The Steelers promoted 2011 seventh-rounder Baron Batch from the practice squad to fill Mendenhall's roster spot.

There was some discussion early this season that Mendenhall, who is in the last year of his rookie contract, could be re-signed. We're guessing that ship has now sailed.
