Greg McElroy named Jets starter for Sunday

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

Not that it really matters at this point -- since the Jets are mathematically eliminated from 2012 playoff consideration -- but Greg McElroy will start for New York at quarterback on Sunday.

The Jets made it official, announcing that McElroy would start against the Chargers just a day after the Jets literally fumbled their season away on Monday night against the Titans.

Following the Jets loss Monday, a somber, near-tearful Rex Ryan declined to name a starting quarterback for this week. But reports emerged on Tuesday that there's "no way" Sanchez, who threw four picks and fumbled once in Tennessee, could start against the Chargers in Week 16.

Part of that may very well be public safety: Jets fans are outraged at the team's inability to produce any offense, and a meaningless home game at Met Life Stadium with Sanchez under center could result in riots. (No, seriously.)

In any other world, the Sanchez Era would've officially ended. It makes a world of sense to cut Sanchez ... except he's owed a pile of money in 2013 that the team can only slightly offset by trading him.

Some of the quotes coming out of New York about Sanchez on Tuesday are flat-out brutal. And they might be anonymous, but they're certainly accurate.

But again, it's really too little, too late. McElroy came in for a benched Sanchez against the Cardinals a few weeks ago and led the Jets to victory. Naturally, they decided to make him inactive for the next two games.

Meanwhile, Tim Tebow's been active and receiving bizarre spurts of playing time that appear designed to bring out the absolute worst in Sanchez.

None of it makes any sense, which is why it's perfect that the Jets are going with their best option when they're playing for nothing.
