I've made the case that Russell Wilson deserves the Rookie of the Year award already. And it's a position that suddenly isn't so lonely -- lots of people this week have come out in favor of Wilson possibly winning the award.
But the Seahawks' bandwagon is getting pretty, pretty, pretty big. Heading into Week 13, Seattle was 50-1 to win the title. They're now 16-1, quite the sizable jump. That jump will be even bigger if they beat the Super Bowl-favorite 49ers (9-2) on Sunday night, in what is everyone's best bet for the game of the week.
Is Seattle a real Super Bowl contender? I say yes, provided Richard Sherman doesn't lose his appeal on Friday. Seattle has an elite defense that gets all over opposing quarterbacks in different ways, can play tight man-to-man coverage and match up with just about anyone in the passing game, an elite running game and a passing attack that is steadily improving.
A bad loss -- or a bad performance by Wilson and his wideouts -- against the 49ers would seriously stem the optimism for Seattle's Super Bowl hopes.
But a strong showing from Seattle will probably keep their Vegas momentum going. Of course, a victory might put them in play for a home game in the playoffs. And we've seen what they can do at home.
