2012 NFL Records Watch: Adrian Peterson eyes rushing mark

On Saturday night, Lions wideout Calvin Johnson broke Jerry Rice's single-season receiving yards record. Here's a look at some of the other records -- both notable and less so -- that could fall in the next two weeks.

* Against the Broncos Sunday, Browns running back Trent Richardson broke Jim Brown's team rookie rushing record of 942 yards, which had stood since 1957. Last week, Richardson broke Cleveland's rookie touchdown mark when he scored for the 10th time this season. Brown and Eric Metcalf previously shared the record.

* Cowboys' Jason Witten hauled in his 103 catch of the season in Week 16's game against the Saints, which is a new NFL record among tight ends, surpassing Tony Gonzalez's old mark.

* Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is 188 yards short of 2,000 rushing yards for the season and needs 294 yards to break Eric Dickerson's single-season rushing record of 2,105.

UPDATE: Peterson ran for 86 yards in the Vikings win, and he'll need 102 yards next week to get to 2,000 and 208 yards to surpass Dickerson.

* Against the Chiefs Sunday, Colts quarterback Andrew Luck set the rookie single-season passing record breaking Panthers' Cam Newton mark from 2011.

* Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles is now the NFL's all-time leader in career yards per carry with a 5.69 average (via the Chiefs' Twitter feed). Worth noting: this is a running backs-only record; Michael Vick leads all players with a 7-yards-per-carry average.

* Heading into Week 17, Titans running back Chris Johnson needs 168 rushing yards to become the fourth player in history with 7,000 rushing yards in his first five seasons, after Dickerson, LaDainian Tomlinson and Emmitt Smith. (via ESPN Stats & Info)

* On Sunday against the Cowboys, Saints quarterback Drew Brees became the first player to have three consecutive 4,500-yard-plus passing seasons.

* Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford needs six attempts to break Drew Bledsoe's record of 691 attempts in a season.

* Rookie Vikings kicker Blair Walsh's next 50-yard field goal will set the record for most in a season. He has converted eight from 50 or beyond. Last week, Walsh passed Randy Moss as Minnesota's all-time leading rookie scorer with 116 points.

UPDATE: Walsh set the record in the first half, striping a 56-yarder against the Texans.

* Redskins kicker Kai Forbath connected on his 17th consecutive field goal in Washington's game against Philadelphia, an NFL record.

So how did Forbath do it?

* In the last five games, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has passed for 10 touchdowns, no interceptions and a 109.8 passer rating. He also has 152 attemps without a pick, the longest current streak in the league. Newton has 293 rushing yards and three touchdowns over that same stretch, and he's the only player with 30-plus passing touchdowns (39) and 20-plus rushing touchdowns (21) in his first two NFL seasons.

* Redskins rookie running back Alfred Morris needs one more touchdown to match Charley Taylor's team rookie record for total touchdowns in a season (10 -- five rushing, five receiving --in 1964). (via the Washington Post's Mike Jones)

* Raiders quarterback Carson Palmer enters Week 16 with 3,987 passing yards. He'll need 13 passing yards to join Rich Gannon (4,689 yards in 2002) as the only quarterbacks in club history to reach 4,000 yards in a season.
