Kai Forbath, Blair Walsh set kicking records as rookies on Sunday

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

What a day it was early for rookie kickers: Kai Forbath and Blair Walsh both set records in Week 16.

Walsh, the big-legged Vikings kicker who was drafted in the sixth round, hit his ninth field goal of 50 yards or more on Sunday to give the Vikings a 10-3 lead over the Texans.

His ninth was a 56-yard kick ,and he's now 9-for-9 this season, which might be an even more impressive achievement.

Forbath, an undrafted free agent who was brought in to replace Billy Cundiff after he turned into a shankapotomus for the Redskins this season, connected on his 17th straight field goal, the most by any kicker in NFL history.

Kickers don't get much love because, well, they're kickers. But both Forbath and Walsh have been critical to their respective teams' success this season. That's reflected by these records.

And it should also be a reminder -- considering how the two players were acquired -- that overpaying for a kicker is one of the worst things you can do in the NFL.
