Packers C Jeff Saturday talks about making the Pro Bowl

Packers center Jeff Saturday has, in the immortal words of former NFL coach Bum Phillips, caught more hell than a little bit over his selection to the NFC Pro Bowl squad. On Wednesday, shortly before the teams were officially announced, Twitter did what Twitter does: leak news and then lambaste it. In this case, that meant a browbeating for Saturday, who was benched six days ago for ineffectiveness.

A day later, Saturday spoke about his free trip to Hawaii and the implications that go along with it.

"Obviously it's always an honor," he told ESPNWisconsin.com's Jason Wilde. "Anytime you get to go to the Pro Bowl, it is an honor and you appreciate everyone -- the players, coaches and fans -- that voted for you. As an offensive lineman, it is nice to get the award.

"I am disappointed for Josh Sitton," Saturday continued. "I think he should be there. It is disappointing for me, for him. I would love to be able to pass it to him."

Packers coach Mike McCarthy was less diplomatic, commending the three Green Bay players who made it (Saturday, quarterback Aaron Rodgers and linebacker Clay Matthews) without qualification.

"Proud of all three guys who went to Pro Bowl. With Saturday, we won't apologize for any kind of honor like that," McCarthy said Thursday according to NFL.com.

Frankly, all the mock outrage is a bit much. The Pro Bowl has been a glorified game of flag football for years.

After all, it was 12 months ago Rodgers said he was embarrassed by the NFC's effort in the game.

“I feel like there should be some pride involved in a game like that, and I was just surprised by some of the efforts of some of the guys," he said at the time. "This was my second Pro Bowl. [I] played in the one in 2010. It was down in Fort Lauderdale/Miami. I felt that that one had a lot more energy."

Translation: Jeff Saturday ain't the biggest problem facing the Pro Bowl.
