The Jets fired general manager Mike Tannenbaum on Monday and his eventual successor will have a hot mess on his hands. The team is roughly $20 million over the salary cap, "franchise quarterback" Mark Sanchez is guaranteed $8.25 million in 2013, and the head coach apparently is a huge fan of Tebow-inspired tattoos.

There's more, of course. According to ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini, the Jets are telling GM candidates "they won't be considered unless they agree to keep Rex Ryan for a year."
That's some blueprint for success. Tell the guy who is supposed to have a big say in personnel and hiring decisions that Ryan, the man behind back-to-back 8-8 and 6-10 seasons, can't be fired for at least another 12 months.
This might explain why longtime general manager Bill Polian, who's looking to return to an NFL front office, reportedly told the Jets thanks, but no thanks when they inquired about his availability prior to Tannenbaum's dismissal.
Cimini runs down the list of other candidates: former Browns GM Tom Heckert, 49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble and Packers director of football operations John Dorsey (all scheduled to interview with the team this weekend); as well as Falcons director of player personnel David Caldwell, Giants director of college scouting Marc Ross (who, Cimini notes, would satisfy the Rooney Rule requirement) and Jets assistant GM Scott Cohen.
Perhaps a rested, tanned and inked Ryan can shed some light on this when he finally meets with the media for his end-of-season press conference.
