Panthers hire Dave Gettleman as GM

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

Panthers coach Ron Rivera is safe for the 2013 season. Now he knows who he'll have to impress to keep his job after that.

The Panthers announced Wednesday that they've hired former Giants executive Dave Gettleman as their new general manager. Gettleman had been the Giants director of pro personnel for 13 years before moving to a senior pro personnel analyst position with the team last season. That apparently looked good to the Carolina brass.

"I was very impressed with Dave's experience and think he will be a very good fit for our organization," Panthers owner Jerry Richardson said in a statement released by the team. "He has an extensive background in personnel and comes from an organization in the New York Giants that I hold in high regard and played an instrumental role in their success."

Gettleman beat out Giants college scouting director Marc Ross and Montreal Alouttes GM Jim Popp -- both of whom reportedly interviewed Tuesday. Titans executive Lake Dawson also reportedly had interviewed.

"I am honored and thrilled to have the opportunity to work in the Panthers organization,” Gettleman said. “It is similar to the Giants organization in which I have had the privilege of working the last 15 years and has a lot of pieces in place for success. I am excited about getting started."
