The Pro Football Hall of Fame's process for determining who will gain entry to football's hallowed halls is a tedious one culminating at the Super Bowl, but it took other step on Friday when the folks in Canton, Ohio, announced they'd trimmed their list to 17 finalists.

As expected, several of the first-time nominees made it through the cut list. Modern-day stars Warren Sapp, Michael Strahan, Jonathan Ogden and Larry Allen all made it to the finalist list.

The finalist list also includes the now infamous clotted group of wide receivers: Cris Carter, Tim Brown and Andre Reed, all of whom will find it difficult to get enshrined this year. (Again.)

Bill Parcells is the only coaching candidate on the finalist list, while Eddie DeBartolo, Jr., and Art Modell are the only owner candidates available for voting.

Previously 27 semifinalists were announced by the Hall of Fame and now the Hall is down to 15 modern-era finalists and two senior class candidates.

The seniors up for voting this year are linebacker Dave Robinson and defensive tackle Curley Culp. At the Super Bowl, the 46 Hall of Fame voters will meet and vote on Robinson and Culp; if they receive 80 percent votes in favor of their induction, they'll enter the Hall.

There's a similar process for the remaining 15 finalists, although their list will be whittled by the voters from 15 to 10 and then 10 to five in a series of voting processes. After that, the voters will weigh in with a "yay" or "nay" on the five. Former players who receive 80 percent get in, anything less and they're left out in the cold.

Here's the list of finalists:

Warren Sapp (DL)
Michael Strahan (DL)
Jonathan Ogden (OL)
Larry Allen (OL)
Tim Brown (WR)
Cris Carter (WR)
Andre Reed (WR)
