While the NFL (and professional sports all over the world) are rife with sponsorship and capitalism, it's always a little bit sad when a previously unaffiliated stadium suddenly becomes laden with a new burdensome name that advertises a product that has little or nothing to do with sports.
But when a new owner (say, Jimmy Haslam) takes over a team, he's free to do whatever he wants when it comes to stadium-naming rights, and that's why it shouldn't be a huge surprise that the team announced Tuesday that the new name of Cleveland Browns Stadium is FirstEnergy Stadium.
So, what are the Browns getting out of this deal?

While the new money gained by the Browns will be helpful, that doesn't mean we can't be a little sad that corporate sponsorship wins out once again.
As the Cleveland Plain Dealer points out, there are NFL stadiums that don't have sponsorship names: Cowboys Stadium, Arrowhead Stadium, Lambeau Field, Ralph Wilson Stadium, Georgia Dome, Candlestick Park, Paul Brown Stadium and Soldier Field.
