Browns hire Michael Lombardi as VP of player personnel

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

For the past couple of seasons, former NFL executive Michael Lombardi -- working as an analyst on NFL Network since 2008 -- has been tied to various personnel jobs around the league. On Friday, he finally took one.

The Browns announced that Lombardi has been named vice president of player personnel in the new Cleveland front office. A press conference will be held Friday at 11:30 a.m.

This isn't a huge surprise, considering Lombardi worked with new Cleveland CEO Joe Banner in Philadelphia. Though Lombardi hasn't worked in the NFL since 2008, he has has 22 years of experience as a league executive.

He spent 1999-2007 with the Raiders and was with San Francisco, Philadelphia and Cleveland (in the Bill Belichick reigme) before that.

As CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora points out, the Jets now are the only team left looking for someone to run the personnel department.

As for the initial reaction to the Lombardi news on Twitter? Not very good.
