For the gambler in you, conference championships

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

Each week, we'll take the best -- and cleverest -- odds collected by Bovada for the upcoming week and give our take. This is important stuff, perhaps the most important post you'll read all week. Because if you can't lose money while watching a game in which you have absolutely no effect, what's the point of watching sports at all?

Note: Home team is listed first in Against the Spread.

NFC title game: Falcons +4.5 vs. 49ers

Sunday, 3:00 p.m. ET, Fox

2012 Against The Spread

Rush offense: 29thRush defense: 4th
Pass defense: 23rdPass offense: 23rd
Rush defense: 21stRush offense: 4th

Verdict: I wasn't a believer in the Falcons last week. But after getting out to an early lead and then showing fortitude to overcome the Seahawks' crazy comeback attempt, I've changed my mind. At least for this week. In the Georgia Dome, the 49ers are going to have a tough time beating the Falcons. Unless, of course, Kaepernick goes bonkers again. Still, I like the Falcons to win this one.

AFC title game: Patriots -9.5 vs. Ravens

Sunday, 6:30 p.m. ET, CBS

2012 Against The Spread
Overall: 10-7Overall: 8-9-1
Home: 5-4Home: 4-5
Away: 5-3Away: 4-4-1
Last 5 v. BAL: 3-1-1Last 5 v. NE: 1-3-1
2012 Team Rankings
Pass offense: 4thPass defense: 17th
Rush offense: 7thRush defense: 20th
Pass defense: 29thPass offense: 15th
Rush defense: 9thRush offense: 11th

Verdict: The Patriots are the best team left in the NFL playoffs. The Ravens might be the worst. Even so, I think this line is too high. Joe Flacco continues to play well, and the Ravens beating the Broncos last week in overtime was awfully impressive. New England will struggle a little with Baltimore but ultimately win by a touchdown.

Last week: 1-3 against the spread (hit on the Seahawks +2.5 vs. the Falcons; missed on the Broncos -9.5 vs. the Ravens, the Packers +3.5 vs. the 49ers, the Texans +9.5 vs. the Patriots). 1-0 on prop bets (hit on the Broncos not winning the Super Bowl)

Overall: 26-33 against the spread; 32-17-1 on prop bets; one prop still undecided (Robert Griffin III winning the offensive rookie of the year).
