If you thought Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was safe heading into 2013 and everything was just fine in Arlington on the offensive side of the ball, owner Jerry Jones is here to dispel that notion.
Jones told reporters Tuesday that Garrett won't be calling the offensive plays anymore, and it's possible (if not probable) that offensive coordinator Bill Callahan could take over that responsibility. For now, all Jones would say about who will handle play-calling is that the team is working its way through the candidates.
This leads to a few questions:
1. Whose call was this -- Garrett's or Jones'?
2. if it was Jones' decision, is Garrett already a lame duck going into next season?
“It's never been hell or high water that I have to call the plays,” Garrett said, via the Dallas Morning News. He also said he'd rather have his offensive coordinator call the offense, his defensive coordinator call the defense and his special teams coach call the special teams. Garrett, meanwhile, would be the CEO overlooking everybody.
But that also could be a face-saving measure from Garrett to mask any thought that he'd be upset with the team's change in direction and that he's actually in danger of losing his job.
All of this is interesting, especially since Callahan said in October that Garrett did a fine job of calling the plays.
"We got great communication on the sideline and in between series," Callahan said, via ESPN Dallas. "He's the playcaller here and does a great job with it, and he has a great feel for what Tony [Romo] likes and what we want to do as an offense. I got nothing but immense respect for Coach and his ability to call plays."
But if Callahan is the one calling plays for 2013, here's hoping nobody will call on Tim Brown to get his comment on the matter.
