It's been a rough year on and off the field for the Dallas Cowboys. In December, nose tackle Josh Brent was charged with intoxication manslaughter after an early morning automobile accident killed passenger, friend and teammate Jerry Brown.

Early Tuesday, Cowboys nose tackle Jay Ratliff was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Grapevine, Texas, according to ESPNDallas.com's Tim McMahon (you can see Ratliff's mugshot here). Grapevine police officer Sam Shemwell said that Ratliff crashed his 2011 Ford pickup into an 18-wheeler. Neither Ratliff nor the driver was injured.

Officers on the scene determined that Ratliff was intoxicated and he was arrested and taken to jail. McMahon reports that Ratliff was bonded out of jail Tuesday morning.

Cowboys officials in Mobile, Ala., for Senior Bowl practices declined comment.

Ratliff, who battled injuries in 2012, played in just six games. He made news in December when owner and general manager Jerry Jones admitted that he had a confrontation with Ratliff after Jones told the nose tackle how much the Cowboys needed him on the field.

Sources told 105.3 The Fan's Mike Fisher at the time that the jaw-to-jaw exchange became "volcanic," and that the 70-year-old Jones didn't back down, even as the 6-foot-4, 300-pound Ratliff "rose to physically challenge" the owner "and then made derisive mention of Jones' age."

Jones said earlier this month that changes were coming this offseason, but the implication was that there would be some turnover on the coaching staff. Now Jones may need to reconsider whether Ratliff and the five-year, $40-million contract he signed in September 2011 is worth the trouble.
