Police say Jay Ratliff was verbally abusive after arrest

Coming off the news that Cowboys nose tackle Jay Ratliff was arrested on Tuesday and charged with DWI, more details from the incident have emerged.

According to ESPN Dallas, Ratliff was verbally abusive after he was arrested and he refused to take a breath test. Grapevine, Texas, police eventually had to draw his blood in order to determine his blood-alcohol level, and the results will take at least 10 days.

The police affidavit stated that Ratliff took three field sobriety tests and showed 12 clues of intoxication. During the tests, Ratliff said he couldn't perform two of the tests because of his prior football injuries. The affidavit also stated that he had bloodshot, watery eyes and that he had a “moderate odor” of alcohol on his breath.

More from ESPN Dallas:

Despite "major damage to the driver side" of Ratliff's Ford F150 truck, he did not suffer any injuries during the accident with an 18-wheeler. The crash report states that the accident was caused when Ratliff's truck turned into the 18-wheeler, then turned sideways and struck a median protector.

Ratliff told the officer that he had been “chillin' with a homegirl” in Arlington, Texas, and was en route to his home in Southlake. Asked why he was near the Irving/Grapevine border -- an area out of the way if driving from Arlington to Southlake -- Ratliff said he followed directions from his truck's navigation system.

Police said Ratliff was courteous at the accident site, but when he was arrested and brought to jail his “demeanor changed considerably.”
