Jags GM: Maurice Jones-Drew still part of team's offensive core

For more than a year, Maurice Jones-Drew has made it quite clear he wants a contract extension from the Jaguars. Jones-Drew is on record saying he wants to end his career in Jacksonville, but owner Shad Khan also hasn't been tempted to throw a bunch of money at Jones-Drew either.

Jones-Drew skipped offseason workouts before the 2012 season, but the Jaguars, who didn't plan on trading him, weren't going to cave to his demands. So far, they haven't, and Jones-Drew lost leverage this year after missing the last nine games of the season with a foot injury.

But new Jacksonville general manager Dave Caldwell said last week Jones-Drew is still a part of the team's offensive core. Just don't expect a new contract anytime soon. Though Jones-Drew is entering the final season of a five-year, $31 million deal where he'll make a base salary of $4.95 million, Caldwell said the team will “address [a new contract] toward the end of the season.”

First, though, Jones-Drew will have to rehab his foot -- on which he didn't get surgery until just before Week 17.

“I should have had it a little earlier than when I did, but it's just something that you learn from,” Jones-Drew said recently. “I tried to go. It just didn't work and then finally enough was enough.”

Jones-Drew also plans to participate in workouts this offseason.
