On Wednesday, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported the Titans were expected to pay the $9 million guaranteed to lock in running back Chris Johnson for 2013. Though that transaction won't happen until the weekend, a "great" conversation between CJ2K and head coach Mike Munchak all but confirms Tennessee will keep the running back.
La Canfora heard from a source that the meeting was "very positive," and Johnson confirmed as much on Twitter, writing that he had a "great 30min convo" with Munchak.
Had a great 30min convo with coach munchak and we both look forward to making that next step— Chris Johnson (@ChrisJohnson28) February 7, 2013
La Canfora reports that Johnson has, at times, privately worried about the Titans' ability to compete in the future but is now enthused for the offseason and energized to help Tennessee improve in 2013.
He should be enthused: Tennessee will be handing him $9 million guaranteed for 2013 once he's on the roster on Saturday.
Johnson struggled early on in 2012 but ended up having a good season, rushing for 1,243 yards and averaging 4.5 yards per carry for the season, his highest total since his 2,000-yard season in 2009.
If the Titans can improve the offensive line this offseason, there's no reason to think Johnson -- with a full, distraction-free offseason -- can't improve again on his numbers in 2013.
