As such, the Bears announced Tuesday morning that they had terminated Knox's contract.
That injury, though, affected more than Knox's career. He recently told the Bears official website that he had been looking forward to helping his wife care for their newborn son, Johnny Knox III, when Seattle's Anthony Hargrove basically folded him in half as they both went for a loose football (for those of you who aren't squeamish, you can watch the replay here).
"My plan was to help pick up some of the slack and wake up in the middle of the night with the baby because she wasn't going to be able to move around much," Knox said. "But a week later everything changed when I got hurt. …
“It was a freak play. You'll probably never see that happen to anybody again. I've tried not to ask myself why it happened to me. You always hear that everything happens for a reason and I know things will work out for the best."
As for his football life, Knox would like to play again. But he's also looking at short-term goals, just getting through his daily exercise routine for one, before he can focus on the bigger picture of his career.
"The toughest thing has been coming to rehab every day knowing that I can't go out there and practice or play in games and help my team win," said Knox, who made the Pro Bowl in 2009 as a returner. "But I've had a lot of support from my teammates, friends and family. I know I've got to look at the big picture, and that's my health.”
