Redskins sign second-round disappointment Ron Brace

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

When the Patriots took nose tackle Ron Brace in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft, they probably expected a little more than what Brace provided in his four seasons: 39 games, seven starts, 39 tackles, one forced fumble.

That was it.

It wasn't surprising that New England cut ties with Brace in December; it was only surprising the Patriots hadn't done so earlier.

But Brace will get another chance. The Redskins announced Thursday that they have signed him.

For a player like Brace, who admitted to having a tough time learning the Patriots' playbook and who has been hampered by injuries, it's another chance to prove he can play a supporting role in the NFL.

“You know what you have in Brace,” ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss wrote before the 2012 season. “We've seen him play 34 nose [tackle], 34 [defensive] end, 43 tackle and sub rusher, and I think his best fit is 34 left end in this scheme. Given his rare size, I can see why the team would maybe have a longer leash for him than with others (e.g. CB Darius Butler), but it just seems like it hasn't fully come together for him over his first three seasons. We've seen flashes (forced fumble in Denver last season) but not at the consistent level Bill Belichick desires.”

Maybe things will be better in Washington for a man who seemingly had plenty of potential coming out of college.
