Onterio McCalebb runs 4.34 40, Chris Johnson's combine record safe

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

INDIANAPOLIS -- For a brief time, Auburn running back Onterio McCalebb looked poised to topple Chris Johnson's NFL Scouting Combine 40-yard-dash record of 4.24 seconds. But his unofficial time of 4.21 took a monster hit when it became legit and he's been credited with a 4.34 official time.

Not that 4.34 is slow or anything. It still qualifies McCalebb as the second-fastest time of Sunday's action, tying him with West Virginia wideout Tavon Austin and Texas A&M receiver Ryan Swope.

Those three trail Texas wideout Marquise Goodwin, who posted a 4.27 official time.

McCalebb ran a 4.21 and 4.27 unofficially, but there weren't a whole lot of people that believed his official time would take down CJ2K, including the man who set the mark himself.

That being said ... Johnson still wasn't 100 percent sure his record was safe.

You could argue that Bo Jackson's 4.12 40 time at the 1986 combine is the greatest run of all time. But it was before the league started making the times "official," so Johnson technically holds the record.

And, having survived the wideout and running back workouts, it's a record he's likely to keep a grip on for at least one more year.
