Two quick caveats: The combine doesn't change what people think about you, and the 40 isn't the end-all, be-all for cornerbacks. That being said, congratulations, Dee Milliner, you just made yourself some money.
Milliner shredded the 40-yard dash on Tuesday, running the fastest time of all defensive backs unofficially. Milliner ran a 4.31 40 in his first attempt and then hit a 4.37 in his second attempt, just in case anyone needed validation.
My favorite part about this? Milliner's response to reporters when they asked him Sunday what he would run.
"Watch the NFL Combine," Milliner said more than once.
There's no question Milliner's the top cornerback in the 2013 NFL Draft class. And now he looks like a virtual lock to go in the top 10 come April; I mocked him to the Browns at No. 6 and that's the furthest he fell in all of our mocks.
So it's not like we're talking about a guy who was going to plummet with a slower 40 time. What makes his performance important is it's probably the last time we'll see him. Milliner will have surgery to repair a torn labrum (let's not forget he's busting out his 40 time with that injury) in between the combine and Alabama's pro day on March 13.
He'll supposedly be ready for training camp, so there's not much concern about drafting him. Which means if someone wants Milliner on their team, they'll probably need to be holding a top-five pick by the time the draft rolls around.
