Tom Brady doesn't want to talk new contract: 'I really do just want to win'

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer
Tom Brady's new deal is nothing but good for New England. (USATSI)

Stop me if you've heard this, but Tom Brady just got paid. OK, maybe paid -- without the italics -- is better, since Brady took a deal that was surprisingly team-friendly. Not everyone agrees with that, however. And there's been a lot of debate about the contract in the past 48 hours.

But what does Brady think? Well, he has no interest in talking about the contract, telling John Dennis of WEEI in a statement that athletes "all make way more than our fair share" and that he all he wants do is "win."

"I don't want to talk about this on the radio or anywhere else for that matter," Brady said in the statement. "Athletes are always talking about money at a time when everyone else is struggling so badly to make it. We all make way more than our fair share. And I just think it reflects poorly on myself and my teammates. I really do just want to win, and that has and will continue to be the reason that motivates me and is the biggest factor in my decision-making process."

To be perfectly honest, this is a pretty good statement. It lets Brady push the narrative that he took a team-friendly deal (he did); it lets Brady tell anyone who asks that he's already said everything he'll say about the new deal; and it makes him look like a nice guy/leader/saint/etc.

But don't you worry, Patriots hater, you'll still be able to respond. Because Brady did this, people can call him holier-than-thou, they can accuse him of being a phony and all those other fun things.

Ultimately the deal was a win-win for the Patriots and Brady, both of whom got what they wanted and needed out of the deal.

The true test of whether it worked will be New England's activity in free agency this offseason and whether or not the team is able to bring home another Lombardi Trophy within the next few years.
