Chiefs sign Dwayne Bowe, Dustin Colquitt, tag Branden Albert

By Will Brinson | NFL Writer

Just when it looked like the franchise-tag deadline would come and go without any movement from the Chiefs, Kansas City snuck a pair of big-time moves in at the deadline, signing Dwayne Bowe to a five-year contract and hitting left tackle Branden Albert with the franchise tag.

CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports that Bowe will get a five-year deal from Kansas City and that the Chiefs will use their tag on Albert.

Albert probably isn't too thrilled about the last-minute happenings, having tweeted the following at about 3:59 p.m. ET:

If for some reason his tweet didn't show up, those are hourglasses and a stopwatch he threw out there just before the franchise-tag deadline. Albert's Twitter account went silent for a while before he congratulated Dwayne Bowe and punter Dustin Colquitt, who also reached a deal with the Chiefs and then tweeted the following:

It's not all bad, though. He'll get a one-year, fully guaranteed $9.828 million deal from the Chiefs for 2013 and can work on a long-term deal if he and Kansas City come to an agreement before July 15.

The timing of the Bowe deal also suggests that the Chiefs were prepared to use their tag on the wide receiver if they couldn't figure out a contract before the deadline. And to me that suggests Bowe will get a big old chunk of change from Kansas City. If he'd been tagged a second time, Bowe would've gotten nearly $20 million in guaranteed money, so he should have a lot coming his way (Vincent Jackson money or more?) from Kansas City.

Speaking of big money, you noticed I mentioned punter Dustin Colquitt. He got paid, too; Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Colquitt landed a five-year, $18.75 million deal from Kansas City, including $8.9 million guaranteed.

Mamas, always let your babies grow up to be punters.
