49ers cut K David Akers

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

A couple of days ago, we wrote that the 49ers were planning to release 38-year-old kicker David Akers. Now, San Francisco has made it official, cutting the 14-year veteran Wednesday.

“The 49ers would like to thank David for his service, dedication and leadership over the past two years,” general manager Trent Baalke said in a statement released by the team. “He is a true professional who represented himself and this organization with class. We wish him and his family all the best.”

Akers is a six-time Pro Bowler who led the league in points scored in 2010 and 2011. He had one of the best years of his career in 2011, making an NFL-record 44 field goals.

But he struggled badly last year, making only 69 percent of his attempts. Before the playoffs, the 49ers brought in Billy Cundiff to compete for the job. But overall, the team showed incredible loyalty to Akers in keeping him on the squad for the Super Bowl.
