Redskins release CB DeAngelo Hall

Considering he would have nailed the Redskins with an $8 million salary cap hit, the news, as confirmed by CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, that the Redskins have released cornerback DeAngelo Hall is not a surprise.

As the Washington Post reported, Hall was ready to renegotiate his deal (he signed a six-year, $55 million contract in 2009 and was due $7.5 million this season). But instead the Redskins decided to flat-out release him.

The unfortunate part for Hall, who has 17 interceptions in the past four seasons and is a three-time Pro Bowler (though he's less effective than he thinks), is that he enters a free-agent market flush with veteran cornerbacks looking for perhaps one final contract.

Now, he'll be competing with Sean Smith, Aqib Talib and Brent Grimes (among several others who are considered lower-tier defensive backs) for a coveted free-agent deal. Another problem for Hall: As CBSSports.com's Matt Rybaltowski pointed out a few days ago, Hall's 2012 season was awfully underwhelming.

And it sounds like the Redskins aren't done getting rid of players.
