Eagles release CB Nnamdi Asomugha

The Eagles ended one of the biggest free agent disasters in recent memory Tuesday, cutting cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha after just two seasons.

Philadelphia swooped in during the summer before the 2011 season and snagged Asomugha off the free-agent market; he was supposed to be part of a "dream team" that finally took Andy Reid's team to the promised land.

Instead, Asomugha was a colossal bust and clearly lost a step (or 10) when shoved into the Eagles' defensive system.

Philly's struggles led to coaching shakeups, followed by Reid's firing and, ultimately, Asomugha's release.

He was released by the team as close as possible to the start of the 2013 league year, with the Eagles attempting to try to avoid paying him $4 million to walk out the door. But there weren't any suitors for Asomugha and he'll now hit the open market.

It feels like we've been writing about Asomugha's struggles forever (remember how the old blog setup looked?) and with good reason: he was a train wreck in Philadelphia.

The Eagles asked him to take a "massive" paycut prior to releasing him; obviously the cornerback wasn't interested in making less money and enjoying the same scrutiny.

Not that his current employers were impressed with him -- Chip Kelly had some, um, interesting words to describe the cornerback when speaking at the 2013 NFL Combine.

"I think Nnamdi has the skills to be ... a football player," Kelly said.

Ouch. And thus, this was very much expected.

It's going to be fun to see how the market reacts to Asomugha. He'll get a gig again, but his star has fallen incredibly far especially when you consider there was actually a debate about who you would rather have between him and Darrelle Revis only a few years ago.
