Martellus Bennett makes dinosaur-sized splash for Chicago

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

With tight end Martellus Bennett signing a four-year deal with the Bears, his move to Chicago netted him, according to the Baltimore Sun's Aaron Wilson, a nice chunk of change and a brand new audience to whom he can … um … be awesome.

First, the numbers: via Wilson, it's a four-year contract worth $20.4 million with a $4.5 million bonus. So, a pretty sweat deal for him, especially since Bennett talked Wednesday about putting down roots in a city (he said he and his wife had been “lily pads” so far in his career).

Second, the awesomeness -- of the press conference variety, at least.

A few examples:

“I'm excited to be a Chicago Bear,” Bennett said. “Bears are one of my favorite animals -- after dinosaurs. I don't think there are any dinosaurs in the NFL, so a Bear is a good thing to be.”

This, mind you, was in his initial statement. So, his first public sentences as a member of the Chicago franchise features dinosaurs and the possibility of that species in the NFL. Awesome.

More from Bennett:

“I fit in well in most places -- whether it's the zoo or the classroom.”

And on his Black Unicorn nickname:

“I have several nicknames I go by. The black unicorn is the one that seemed to stick the longest. Basically, black unicorns are rare. Any time you see a picture, it's a white unicorn. Being African-American, I thought it would be clever to be the black unicorn. … unicorns are cool, but I prefer dinosaurs honestly. One day I had on black tights, I was running down the field, and I felt like a unicorn. I didn't feel like a horse. I felt like a unicorn. ... It's magical. I enjoy it."

And if those three quotes aren't enough to satiate your Bennett appetite, here's 7 minutes of clips from his introductory presser. The one question I wanted answered, though, was this: Bennett understands that unicorns of any race or creed are rare, right?
