Colts sign DT Ricky Jean-Francois

By Josh Katzowitz | NFL Writer

If you like paying tens of millions of dollars to a player who has never participated in more than 30 percent of his team's defensive snaps, then Colts owner Jim Irsay has news to report that you'll really enjoy.

The signing that so excites Irsay is of former 49ers defensive tackle Ricky Jean-Francois, who, as CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports, has agreed to a four-year, $22 million deal.

That, of course, is quite a bit of money for someone who, as the Sideline View's Adam Caplan writes, has never played more than 27 percent of his team's snaps.

In fact, in Jean-Francois' four seasons, he's started a total of five out of 51 games and has combined for 49 tackles and three sacks. That apparently is worth more than $20 million. To be fair, though, Jean-Francois most likely will be a starter on the Indianapolis defensive line.

“If he maintains his performance level, [Jean-Francois] will bring some much needed stoutness to the Colts' run defense,” wrote Pro Football Focus. “Jean-Francois has been lauded for his position versatility during the free agency period after registering 76 of his 328 snaps last season at nose tackle in a 3-man line.”
