San Francisco 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith had shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The surgery reportedly occurred a few weeks ago, and there is no firm timetable for Smith's recovery time, though it can take up to 12 weeks. The report also states Smith is no longer in a sling.

It is unclear when the injury occurred and which shoulder was damaged.

Smith was on the team's injury report from Week 12 until Super Bowl XLVII with the torn labrum. He was on a record-setting pace for sacks before the injury, which clearly limited his effectiveness.

In the first 10 games of the season, Smith piled up 15 sacks, while he had just four in the team's final six games and was shut out during the 49ers' playoff run.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the procedure was not related to Smith's mixed martial arts training.
