Former NFL running back Brian Westbrook has come out and said that he has been suffering from short-term memory loss and he is attributing his decreased brain function to two concussions suffered during his abridged nine-year career.

Westbrook, 33, suffered a concussion in 2009 and returned three weeks later. He then suffered a second concussion in his first game back.

"I thought I took enough time off to rest and recuperate. I thought I was healed completely," Westbrook told the Associated Press. "But I got hit, I got my bell rung. I was out for another few weeks with another concussion."

Westbrook fears his symptoms will continue to progress, and he has since become an advocate for education and preventions of injuries -- like concussions -- and the dangers of trying to return too quickly.

In eight seasons with the Eagles and one in San Francisco, Westbrook was one of the league's most dangerous return men. He was twice named to the All-Pro team and appeared in two Pro Bowls.
