Report: Brian Urlacher's price tag too costly for Vikings

Days after the signing of Greg Jennings, it appears unlikely that the Minnesota Vikings will look to add another former Pro Bowler from one of their NFC North rivals.

The Vikings won't pursue Brian Urlacher unless the Bears' eight-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker substantially lowers his price tag, according to a report from Tom Pelissero of ESPN Twin Cities. Urlacher will likely sport a new uniform in 2013 after talks reportedly broke off with the Bears Thursday. Urlacher had sought a one-year deal in the range of $3.5 to $4 million, and the Bears held firm on their one-year, $2 million proposal, according to NFL.com.

The Vikings have a void at middle linebacker after Jasper Brinkley signed a two-year, $3.5 million contract with the Cardinals last week. The Vikings could promote reserve middle linebacker Audie Cole or pursue a linebacker with an early round draft pick. Even with the signing of Jennings, the Vikings are roughly $9 million under the salary cap, according to Spotrac.com.

Veteran linebackers Brad Jones of the Packers, Larry Grant of the 49ers, Bart Scott of the Jets and former Dolphins linebacker Karlos Dansby remain free agents. The crop of middle linebackers in the Draft is relatively thin if the Vikings opt to replace Brinkley with a rookie. Only two middle linebackers -- Kevin Minter of LSU and Manti Te'o of Notre Dame -- received at least a second-round grade in CBSSports.com's latest projections. Georgia linebacker Alec Ogletree is classified as an outside linebacker.

Urlacher had 68 tackles in 12 games in 2012, one of the lowest totals of his 13-year career. In Urlacher's previous two seasons he had 227 tackles combined.
