Former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Mark Duper stands accused of beating his 17-year-old son, according to the Associated Press.

Duper, 54, spent Wednesday night in jail and was released the following afternoon after posting $5,000 bond.

Details of the incident were fuzzy Thursday, but the AP is reporting that Duper attacked his son, Marcus, three separate times and twice knocked him unconscious.

Duper's former teammate, Hugh Green, witnessed the event and claims that Marcus started the fight and the former NFL star was acting in self-defense.

In 11 seasons in Miami, Duper caught 59 touchdown passes and was elected to three Pro Bowls.

On Friday afternoon, the Dolphins forwarded a statement from Mark Duper's attorney, George D. Cholakis, on Duper's behalf (via the Miami Herald's Adam Beasley):

"On Tuesday, March 19, there was a situation involving Mark Duper and his seventeen-year-old son Marcus in their home. Mark and his wife Carolyn called the police for assistance and reported what was happening, as it was happening.

"Although the incident did not happen as reported, we will not debate these issues in the media. That debate, if and when necessary, will occur in a court of law. Mark Duper did not commit any acts of child abuse. As a father, he is saddened to hear his son's allegations. Mark is devastated by them. We are confident everyone will understand what really happened once the truth is revealed."
