With Scott Chandler not expected back from his torn ACL by Week 1, the Bills could really use a tight end.

A quarterback too, but that's another issue.

Buffalo brass -- coach Doug Marrone, general manager Buddy Nix, assistant GM Doug Whaley and other officials -- had dinner with free-agent tight end Fred Davis on Saturday night, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Quiet in free agency thus far, the Bills are the third team to show interest in the 27-year-old pass catcher, followed by his former team the Redskins and Browns.

Davis, coming back from an Achilles injury, was cleared to resume running and training last month. It's unclear if he'll be a full-go for training camp.

When healthy and eligible, Davis is one of the league's most dangerous tight ends. He caught 59 balls for 796 yards and three touchdowns in 12 games in 2011, missing the last four for a banned substance violation.

He tore his left Achilles tendon in Week 7 last year, ending his season.
