Broncos DT on Dumervil: 'Unbelievable we lost Elvis this way'

Kevin Vickerson won't be lining up next to Elvis Dumervil this season. That fact, plus the strange series of events prompting Dumervil's move from Denver to Baltimore, are hard for Vickerson to process.

“This is unbelievable to me that we lost Elvis in this way,” the defensive tackle told the Denver Post. “I don't know what happened but someone dropped the ball. When I talk to Elvis I'm going to congratulate him. But we're going to miss him.”

After repeatedly saying “Wow” upon hearing Dumervil signed with the Ravens, Vickerson elaborated.

“Elvis has been a big part of this football team,” he told the paper. “I know business is business, but this is the part of business that sucks. I congratulate Elvis. At the same time those are big shoes to fill coming off the edge. Elvis was a great Bronco. That's my guy. He'll be missed. It's time for other guys to step up. Robert Ayers, Malik Jackson. It's time for No. 91 (Ayers) to step up. Robert Ayers is going to have a big year.''

The Broncos wanted the 29-year-old Dumervil back, but not at the $12 million he made last year. Although Dumervil was willing to play for $4 million less, his faxed signature arrived six minutes late, forcing Denver to release him or pay him $12 million.

The Ravens pounced, signing the pass rusher to a five-year deal. He'll play outside linebacker in Baltimore's 3-4 after playing end in Denver's 4-3.

In six seasons with Denver, Dumervil got 63.5 sacks. The Broncos will try to replace him with an older pass rusher like Dwight Freeney or John Abraham.
