Raiders make it official, release Tommy Kelly

A day after CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora tweeted that the Raiders and defensive lineman Tommy Kelly would part ways, the organization announced Wednesday afternoon it had released him.

Originally a free agent out of Mississippi State, Kelly has spent all nine of his NFL seasons in Oakland. Before his release, he was scheduled to make $6.5 million in 2013. As La Canfora noted, Kelly should garner plenty of interest on the open market.

Meanwhile, it's been a busy offseason for the Raiders. The team lost six players to free agency -- linebacker Philip Wheeler (to the Dolphins), safety Mike Mitchell (Panthers), tight end Brandon Myers (Giants), running back Mike Goodson (Jets), defensive lineman Desmond Bryant (Browns), defensive end Matt Shaughnessy (Cardinals) -- and also released former first-rounders safety Michael Huff (Ravens) and wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, and defensive end Dave Tollefson.

Additionally, La Canfora reported Tuesday that Oakland could be in the mix for Seattle backup quarterback Matt Flynn, which could be a harbinger of things to come for incumbent Carson Palmer.

As for Kelly, who was one of the league's best defensive lineman as recently as 2011, we'll always remember him for an otherwise meaningless tackle save the part where his pants fall off.
