Hopefully Brad Childress wasn't waiting by his phone.

Two and a half months after initially meeting with Andy Reid and the Chiefs about a possible coaching position with the team, Kansas City has finally hired Childress. Childress' official title with the Chiefs is 'spread game analyst/special projects.'

The team didn't specify what exactly Childress' responsibilities will be, but it's probably safe to say, Childress will be looking to help implement the spread offense in a way that works to the strengths of new quarterback Alex Smith. Smith ran a version of the spread at Utah under then-coach Urban Meyer, so he does have some familiarity with it.

Speaking of familiarity, Childress certainly has some with Reid.

Reid and Childress have a long coaching history together that dates back to 1986 when both were assistants on the same staff at Northern Arizona. When Reid was named the head coach of the Eagles in 1999, one of his initial hires was Childress, who served as Philadelphia's quarterbacks coach from 1999-2002, before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2003.

After three seasons as the Eagles offensive coordinator, Childress left Philadelphia to take the head coaching job in Minnesota. Most recently, Childress served as the Browns offensive coordinator last season.
