Dolphins warn guard John Jerry about his weight

By Larry Hartstein | Senior Analyst

You might recall John Jerry from last year's “Hard Knocks.” Showing up nearly 30 pounds overweight to training camp, he vomited on the practice field several times. Dolphins coaches called him a “catastrophe” and “a player descending fast.”

Jerry, 26, eventually got into shape and started all 16 games at right guard.

Coach Joe Philbin wants to avoid a repeat of 2012. According to the Miami Herald, Philbin has warned the 6-5 Jerry about his weight. His official playing weight last season was 328.

"It'll be interesting to see," Philbin said. "I know the big thing we said to him when he left is we want to see how much you weigh when you come back for the offseason program."

Miami's offseason conditioning program starts April 15.

Jerry, entering the final year of his contract, got another warning about his job security when the Dolphins signed guard Lance Louis away from the Bears.

Philbin said Jerry “has to do a better job of staying on his feet better, but he's athletic enough to play guard. There's a lot of pictures of him showing very good quickness and explosiveness off the ball."

Jerry graded out as the 49th-best guard in the NFL last year, according to Pro Football Focus.
