Since trading Braylon Edwards to the New York Jets four seasons ago, a Browns offense devoid of playmakers at wide receiver has been forced to depend on a power running game.

While Cleveland has been unable to land a big-name wideout in free agency, the Browns' revamped front office is working to upgrade a passing attack that ranked 25th in the NFL last season. With Joshua Cribbs likely to sign in Arizona if he is able to recover from a knee injury, the Browns have expressed interest in Giants free-agent wide receiver Domenik Hixon according to the Cleveland Plain-Dealer.

Hixon, 28, could be viewed as a replacement for Cribbs in a dual returning and receiving capacity. In six NFL seasons, Hixon has nearly 2,000 yards on kickoff returns and almost 600 more on punt returns. Hixon was released after four games with the Broncos in 2007, but was quickly picked up by the Giants where he served as the team's primary kickoff returner during the team's Super Bowl XLII run. Hixon had eight returns for 221 yards, including a 74-yard touchdown in a 2007 regular-season loss to the Patriots. He added an 82-yard touchdown months later in the preseason against the Browns. Hixon, though, hasn't returned kickoffs since 2009.

The six-year veteran has received sparse interest from other teams in free agency. Earlier this week Hixon met with the Raiders, CBSSports.com NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported. The Lions also reportedly made an offer for Hixon at the start of free agency.

Hixon (6-2, 197) is regarded for his steady hands. In three of his last four seasons, he has recorded a catch percentage of at least 61.5 percent. Last season, Hixon caught 67.2 percent of the passes thrown in his direction when he finished with 39 receptions and two touchdowns. The former Akron receiver missed the 2010 season with a torn ACL.
