Cowboys QB Tony Romo talks about $108 million contract extension

By John Breech | CBSSports.com

There's quite a few kinks that have to be worked out when negotiating a $108 million contract extension -- length, money, guaranteed money -- but according to Tony Romo, none of those things stalled his negotiations with the Cowboys.

"There wasn't anything really where I was going to put my foot down and say, 'this is the most important thing with it,'" Romo told the team's website. "More than anything, it was the opportunity to be able to finish the rest of your career with a team that you know is going to win and win big here -- and that to me is exciting."

Romo admitted that one of the reasons the Cowboys wanted to get the deal done quickly was because of the team's salary cap situation. "Part of getting the deal done was so we could sign some people," Romo said. "There's a lot of guys out there. We hopefully can add a few pieces that make us a better football team."

Before Romo signed Friday, the Cowboys were only $51,000 under the salary cap. Romo's extension will save the the team almost $5 million toward the 2013 cap, money that could come in handy when the team begins negotiating a long-term deal with franchise-tagged linebacker Anthony Spencer.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said Friday that he thinks the team can win a Super Bowl with Romo and although Romo didn't say that exactly, he does see the team getting better.

"We're a team on the rise," Romo said. "And I've been around teams on both sides, teams that were good and team's that were not so good. And if we had stayed healthy last year, I think we were that team that would have continued to get better. We're a team on the rise. And it's going to show here going forward."
