Baltimore Ravens safety Christian Thompson has been suspended for the first four games of the 2013 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, the league announced Monday.

The suspension came as no surprise to the Ravens, "We have been aware of this situation for some time," general manager Ozzie Newsome said.

Thompson, who played collegiately at South Carolina State, was Baltimore's fourth round pick in the 2012 draft. He played in seven games for the Ravens last season before being placed on injured reserve in mid-November with a knee injury.

The four-game suspension will cost Thompson four game checks for a total of $112,941, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The second-year player will be eligible to participate in all Baltimore preseason practices and games. However, once the suspension starts, Thompson won't be eligible to return until the day after the Ravens fourth regular season game.

With Baltimore's starting strong safety from last season, Bernard Pollard, now playing for the Titans, Thompson figured to be in the competition to replace him. However, Thompson's suspension could open the door up for someone like James Ihedigbo to put a lock on the starting spot.
