After potentially hitting a snag late in negotiations, the Carson Palmer trade to the Cardinals is complete. Palmer has been dealt by the Raiders to Arizona for a conditional seventh-round pick, CBSSports.com's Michael Freeman confirms.

That's a mere pittance for a starting NFL quarterback who threw for 4,000 yards just last year. But it's also an indication of where the Raiders stood with their quarterback situation.

Oakland just recently traded for Seahawks backup Matt Flynn and owed Palmer a big old chunk of change ($13 million for 2013). Palmer will get a new contract in Arizona that CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reports is worth as much as $20 million over two years. The deal is worth $16 million over two years without incentives and has $10 million guaranteed.

In other words, Palmer took a paycut but not a huge one and is the real winner in this deal.

For the Cardinals, it's a steal. If Palmer starts 13 games for them in 2013, they'll have to give up a seventh-round pick to the Raiders. Which means Palmer is basically free for Arizona.

Oakland had no real choice. And over the long haul -- financially speaking towards their rebuild -- they're better off going with Flynn than they are Palmer.

The Palmer era in Oakland can't be classified as anything other than an unmitigated disaster. The Raiders gave up a first- and second-round pick for Palmer after Jason Campbell went down for the year in 2011. They would finish 8-8 but miss the playoffs. And though Palmer put up big numbers in 2012, Oakland was a trainwreck and much of his stats came in garbage time.

He'll get the latest fresh start of his career in Arizona and could end up being a good fit for Bruce Arians offense. At the very least, Larry Fitzgerald should be the happiest guy in Arizona right now.
